Pest description and damage Brown soft scale are yellowish to dark brown insects (adults are usually darker) that range from 0.1 to 0.2 inches in length. They are found mainly on twigs, and young scale may be found on the foliage, typically on the underside of leaves along the leaf midveins. Scale suck plant sap and produce copious honeydew on which sooty mold may grow.
